OTJIWARONGO, 12 JUN – More than 300 residents of Otjiwarongo and its surroundings on Tuesday attended the public awareness session on fishing rights applications.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Dr Moses Maurihungirire led the session at Otjiwarongo on the correct application procedures.
The deadline for applications is 31 July 2018.
“The exercise to convene meetings on this topic started in Windhoek on Monday, and for this whole week it will be conducted by different teams from the ministry across the country,” Maurihungirire said.
This year’s fishing rights only applies to new applicants.
A presentation on how to fill in the forms, the various requirements and submission procedures was done by a senior official in the ministry, Stanley Ndara.
Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Bernhardt Esau last month announced that 96 fishing rights in nine fishery species are to be issued this year. These include hake, horse mackerel, monk, red crab, rock lobster, line fish, large pelagic fish, mullets and seals.
Ndara explained that application forms can be submitted to the ministry’s offices in Windhoek or to the governors’ offices in the various regions.
Many of the 316 people who attended expressed concern with the “long process” involved in applying for the rights.
